Clinical Examination of the Human Body
Medical students learn to examine each system of the human body, and hence learn to examine the human body as a whole.
Sometimes the 'see one, do one, teach one' method doesn't work all that well. Some things are learned in depth and some 'assumed knowledge' never gets learned.
It would be nice to have a way to practice the examinations over and over to fix them in your mind BEFORE you have to do it on a real live person.
Hopefully I can do something about that here.
The idea is not to replace the actual practice of examination, but to rote learn an outline to provide a solid framework to enable a methodical approach.
So that one performs the examination in the same way every single time.
So that it becomes quick, thorough, automatic; and so that abnormalities stand out.
I didn't realise till after I graduated that 'Long cases' and 'Short cases' are simply what you do every day that you are working as a clinician.
A patient presents to you with a set of symptoms and signs - you go through the history, examination, investigations and give a differential diagnosis - long case.
A patient shows you a 'funny lump on my arm' - you examine the lump - short case.
